Sri Velpugonda Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Jangaon, Telangana
Project Details
Velpugonda translates as “city ruled by Velpus,” which refers to Devathas. The historic Swayambhu Sri Velpugonda Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is atop a hill overlooking a beautiful pushkarini. The climb up the hill provides magnificent vistas of nature.
According to this shrine’s sacred history, after Narasimha Swami vanquished the demon Hiranyakashipu, HE, in HIS fierce (Ugra) form manifested inside a cave on this very hill. Since then, this holy land has been worshipped by Gods and Maharshis, making it a place of divine significance dedicated to Narasimha Swami.
According to sthalapuranam, during his journey towards the South, the revered sage Agastya, known for subduing the Vindhya mountains, arrived at this hill and witnessed Narasimha Swami in Ugra roopam. Seeking to pacify HIM,
Agastya Maharshi performed forty-one days of deep penance in a cave on this hill. Pleased with his devotion, Narasimha Swami revealed himself and gave darshan to the Maharshi. In this blissful state, Agastya Maharshi chanted Narasimha Sahasranamavali and consecrated Narasimha Swami along with HIS consort Lakshmi; as, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami, bringing forth His benevolent form. Agastya Maharshi also took the Velpugonda hill in His palm and performed Abhishekam with Panchamritas, thus giving it the name Agastya Salagrama. It is said even today the Sapta Rishis continue to worship Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami at this sacred site.
This sacred mountain has a Pushkarini, also known as Akka-Chellella Koneru, located at its peak. Every afternoon, Swami is believed to take a ritual bath in this sacred pond. A distinct sound is heard around noon, and Narasimha Swami’s footprints beside the Koneru appear wet, leaving behind a tangible proof of HIS presence. Nitya Aaradhana in the temple begins only after this sacred sound is heard. The water of this Koneru, blessed by the divine touch, is believed to possess medicinal properties and is considered highly sacred.
The Foundation received a request from Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, an Agastya Maharshi Thapo kshetra, to install the Vigraham of Agastya Maharshi to honor his presence at this ancient, historical temple. The installation ceremony took place on March 9th, 2025 marking another significant milestone in our humble journey.
Two stone inscriptions, the Sthala Puranam and about Agastya Maharshi, along with his contributions to humanity, were inscribed in Telugu at the shrine.
